| The
Judaic textiles I create are a contemporary reworking
of such ancient Israelite/Jewish themes as the
lunar cycles and the grain harvest. My strong
Jewish background and later pursuit of Near Eastern
Studies have inspired these distinctive, original
designs which become items for functional use
in synagogue and home. Part of my work also involves
finding imagery that celebrates Jewish women in
ritual and worship.
My mother, Desirée, is my active partner
at our Toronto studio where we have been creating
textile Judaica since 1996. We make challah
and matzah covers, kippot and tallitot, including
unique gifts for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a wedding
and other simchas. An opportunity to custom
design an item, such as chuppah, Torah mantle
or Ark curtain is always welcome.
At Edna Sandler Judaica, we use the finest
quality fabrics and employ techniques such as
appliqué, stitchery, off-loom weaving
and painting on silk to create a rich textured
effect. Our Bukharan-style kippot are made from
a variety of tapestry fabrics, brocades, velvets
and silks. Meticulous handcrafting goes into
every piece.
